Every one knows that exercising reduces the risk of heart disease. But almost everyone feels that exercising is only for obese and fat people. But recent study shows that skinny people are also prone to developing heart diseases because fitness and fatness are both important factors in the genesis of various heart ailments.

Dr. Peter T. Katzmarzyk of York University in North York, Canada, who headed the study, says that heart disease does not develop from a single factor. “Fitness and fatness are both important factors”, he adds.

Even skinny people need to exercise to stay trim and fit thereby reducing the chances of developing heart diseases. Lean, couch potatoes who don’t work out are at greater risk that lean people who are on the move.

Nearly 620 people from different races were studied and they were put through various tests. Their aerobic fitness, their weight, lipid profile and other details were scrutinized and the results tabulated.

It was surprising that the study showed that though fat people were at risk, lean people with poor fitness levels were at risk too.

The scientists sum up by saying that it isn’t enough if you are just slim. A healthy body is one that is fit not just slim. So the moral of the story is that exercising is mandatory for all- if one needs to live healthy. Are the couch potatoes listening?
