Researchers at Harvard, USA have developed a shoe that predicts if someone is likely to fall.
Researchers at Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, have developed a shoe that predicts if someone is likely to fall.
Erez Lieberman and his colleagues have created a high-tech insole packed with computerised sensors that can monitor balance through the soles of the feet, reports New Scientist.By checking which parts of the foot are bearing the most pressure, the ’smart’ insole can work out the risks of a dangerous fall.
At the moment, the experimental device is able only to relay the results to a computer for doctors to analyse.
According to researchers, the new technology could be of great help for the elderly population, which is at higher risk of falling.
The ’smart’ shoes could also help astronauts, who often tumble badly after returning from space to Earth.
