The health hazard of smoking is well known. But there is one more effect of smoking that one can visibly spot; smoking can make you look old, when you are actually not.

The health hazard of smoking is well known. But there is one more effect of smoking that one can visibly spot; smoking can make you look old, when you are actually not. It has a negative impact on the skin all over the body.

Dermatology researchers in the U.S. investigated the effects of smoking on skin, even areas that are not exposed to sunlight. The study observed 82 people who smoked and were also habituated to using sun-protective creams.

The study subjects were photographed with their upper arms at the beginning of the study, and after a period of 12 months. The ages of the subjects were 22 to 91 years old, and 50% of them were smokers.

The finding revealed that people who smoked had more wrinkles than non-smokers. After exposure to the sun, the skin becomes rough and wrinkled portraying a light yellow shade. Cigarette smoking causes the blood vessels to constrict under the skin due to reduced blood supply.
