A research backed by the British government says that smoking will turn out to be the biggest killer in the years to come, surpassing the threat of even HIV. The British broadcasting corporation reported on Monday that in the developing world smoking will kill more people than any other disease in the next 20 years.
The report released from the Institute of Development Studies in Sussex, United Kingdom, says smoking and other tobacco related deaths would surpass 10 million a year. The short term and long term side effects of smoking are well known and a recent study says that smoking has startling and immediate side effects on the cardio vascular system. While the Indian government is coming down on smoking in public places, there seems to be no decrease in the number of smokers or the number of cigarettes sold!!!! The report adds that the process of globalisation is to be blamed for this, as the developing countries are forced to drop tariff barriers against highly successful international brands. Whatever be the reason one this is clear! Smoking is a sure killer. And in the years to come it will turn out to be the deadliest.
