A new study has stated that smoking
increases a woman's risk of suffering from peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD
is characterized by severe pain due to narrowing of arteries in the
extremities. It also increases the risk of heart attack or stroke by 4-5 times.
The study states that smoking
increased the chances of PAD by 20 times. Quitting smoking did not eliminate
the risk altogether. Women who quit smoking 20-years back were still at an
elevated risk.
These findings are published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
