Popular social networking websites such as Facebook are having a distracting effect on school children and their studies, according to a survey.
The poll, headed by Oxygen Factory, discovered nearly 80 per cent of students aged 11 to 18 said social networking sites were a distraction from their studies. As many as 75 per cent said they went online to check their web profiles at least once a day, while more than half felt they spent too much time on the sites, The Couriermail reported.
Facebook communities such as "I tried to study, but ended up on Facebook" and "I Was Studying, Suddenly I'm In Face-book !!" were cited as indications to the problem.
Student motivation expert and survey author Glen Gerreyn said: It's understandable that school kids want to be socially connected, but it's concerning that sites like Facebook have become such a major distraction for students.
"We just want to remind young people to allocate some free time for productive studying."
