Society to Blame for Boys Who Underwent Obesity Surgery

The blame has to be taken by the society for the two boys who reportedly underwent gastric band surgery aged just 14, says an obesity expert, who added that the episode indicates that the UK society has not understood the problem of obesity.

"It is a horrendous indictment on society that we should ever allow these children to get this fat. We have simply in this country failed, all of us collectively, society has failed to really understand the obesity-endemic environment we now live in," said Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum.

He added that the surgery, which was apparently carried out on the NHS at Sheffield Children's Hospital in South Yorkshire, should actually have been a last resort in cases the condition became life-threatening. The Daily Mirror reported that the surgeries were carried out in 2006 and 2009.

National Institute for Clinical Excellence (Nice) guidelines state that obesity surgery in kids must be carried out in extreme cases.

"Why social services, why doctors, why nurses have not triggered alarm bells years ago, because this kind of thing does not happen overnight. It is a great failing, the sooner we understand that, the better off the children of the future will be," Mr Fry observed.
