Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido has already flown to Cuba at the request of the country's government. The doctor from Madrid's Gregorio-Maranon Hospital is considered one of the leading experts in the field of general surgery.

According to the report, Garcia Sabrido is to give Castro a thorough examination and advise Cuban doctors as to whether the Cuban dictator should undergo additional surgery.

Flying aboard an aircraft chartered by the Cuban government, the doctor brought with him medical technology not available in Cuba, the report added.

The 80-year-old Castro transferred power to his younger brother in July before undergoing surgery for a bowel condition.

No further information has been made public about the health of Castro, who has been in power in Cuba for 47 years.
