Scientists at the Centre for Child and Family Policy at Duke University have revealed that kids who are spanked at the age of one year could behave aggressively in future.

The study included data from 500 white, Mexican-American and black children. The researchers assessed the behavior of the kids through their parents. The study found that kids who were spanked at the age of one were more likely to be aggressive in the following couple of years.

“Age one is a key time for establishing the quality of the parenting and the relationship between parent and the child,” said study author Lisa J. Berlin. “Spanking at the age of one reflects a negative dynamic and increases children’s aggression at age two.”

The details of the study appear in the journal Child Development.
