Health experts are advising pregnant women opting for C-section to ask for special inflating boots on the legs during the operation since it would reduce the risk of blood clots. Expectant mothers have a high risk of blood clots known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) due to slower blood flow, because of weight gain, and since they are less active during the final trimester. The risk of developing DVT increases during the pregnancy period and six months after the delivery.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has come up with new guidelines to the obstetricians, recommending them to use the inflating boots in order to reduce the risk of DVT among pregnant women undergoing C-section.
These boots are already used in other major operations including hip replacements and the new guidelines suggest that hospitals should now make it a matter of routine to use them in C-sections as well.
