Spirulina may be the next immune boost on the block

News is out that Spirulina may be the wonder drug we are all looking out for. According to Journal of Medicinal Food, Spirulina , significantly increases the cytokine production in cultured immune system cells. To evaluate the effects of spirulina on the immune system, immunologists at UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center collected blood samples from 12 healthy volunteers and incubated the samples with dilutions of spirulina made from 429 mg capsules of dried, powdered spirulina. After 72 hours they analysed the cytokine level changes using ELISA analysis.

The immunologists concluded after an exhaustive study that spirulina is a strong proponent for protecting against intracellular pathogens and parasites and can potentially increase the expression of agents that stimulate inflammation, which also helps to protect the body against infectious and potentially harmful micro-organisms. Additional studies with individuals consuming spirulina are needed to determine whether these dramatic effects extend beyond the laboratory." With such wonderful properties it is just a matter of time before it becomes the most sought after drug in our pharmacies. Are people queuing up already?
