Structural abnormalities were found in a particular brain area of patients afflicted with Williams syndrome according to a study conducted at the Laboratory for Cognitive Neuroscience at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
Williams syndrome is a rare genetic disorder where children love music and, will therefore spend hours listening to or making music.Ursula Bellugi, director of Laboratory for Cognitive Neuroscience, said: "Understanding the connections between missing genes, the resulting changes in brain structure and function, and ultimately behavior may help us to reveal how the brain works."
Williams syndrome is one of the rare syndromes wherein a genetic predisposition interacts with the environment to sculpt the brain in unique ways. The researchers said that it provides a unique window of understanding on how the brain develops under typical and atypical conditions.
