Students Advised About Ill-Effects of Energy Drinks

Students have been asked to be careful about consuming high-caffeine energy drinks in order to mug for exams or perform well in sports events

Students have been asked to be careful about consuming high-caffeine "energy" drinks in order to mug for exams or perform well in sports events. Rob Fry, president of peak parent group the WA Council of State School Organisations, said that kids could easily be fooled into consuming energy drinks that claim to keep them fresh.

"Students should be getting the appropriate amount of rest that they need, not turning to (caffeine) spiked drinks or any other sorts of drugs to stay awake,” Fry said. “The drinks have mind-altering effects in the short term and are not appropriate for children’s brains. They have adverse long- and medium-term effects and won’t assist people in getting smarter.”

Energy drinks, such as Red Bull, V and Mother are in high demand especially during end of year exams. However uncontrolled consumptions of these drinks is linked to anxiety, mood disturbances, heart palpitations, dizziness, headaches and dehydration.

“While caffeine can help you stay awake, when consumed in large doses (more than 600mg per day) it can cause headaches, hand tremors, impaired coordination, nervousness, diarrhoea and dehydration," said Neil Guard, executive director of the Drug and Alcohol Office.
