A study by the ministry of women and child development titled "Child Abuse: India 2007" has found that 53.22 per cent street children in India have faced sexual abuse.
India has the world’s largest population of street children, according to a survey by UNICEF. This population is estimated to be about 18 million.The above study found that Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar and Delhi had the highest percentage of sexual abuse. In the survey 21.90 per cent child respondents said they had faced a severe form of sexual abuse, while 50.76 per cent said they were subjected to other milder forms of abuse.
Assam, AP, Bihar and Delhi had the highest incidence of sexual assault. Overall street children from AP, Assam, Bihar, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, MP, Maharasthra, Mizoram, Rajasthan, UP and West Bengal faced the worst forms of abuse.
