People may be better off by following a vegetarian version of Atkins low-carb diet.
A team of researchers led by Dr. David Jenkins of St. Michael's Hospital and the University of Toronto in Ontario has said that people may be better off by following a vegetarian version of Atkins low-carb diet.
The so-called Eco-Atkins diet, which does not include meat, was shown to reduce blood pressure levels and also lower levels of bad cholesterol in the blood. The study involved 22 overweight men and women who were put on Eco-Atkins diet for four weeks.Another 22 people acted as controls consuming high-carb, low-fat diet based on low-fat dairy products. At the end of 30 days, weight loss was similar in both groups, but the Eco diet group ad lower LDL cholesterol and healthier blood pressure compared with those in the control group.
The details of the study are reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
