Study suggests symptom driven therapy for adults with asthma

For adults with the problem of asthma, it may help if they take corticosteroid medication when required, and not take anti-inflammatory medication regularly.

People who took corticosteroids whenever they had the symptoms of an attack had the same rate of severe attacks and asthma related decline in lung function as those who were treated with the standard treatment of daily long-term control medication.

Asthma is considered mild when the symptoms exist as wheezing, coughing, or chest tightness more than twice a week and less than daily. Individuals suffering from mild asthmatic attacks do not have a disturbed night because of the symptoms more than two nights in a month.

A new research, which had cited these findings, also say that this treatment of corticosteroids been given symptomatically may not be a viable solution for people who have developed asthma recently, or those who are suffering from much more severe asthmatic periods. Hence this treatment method is only restricted to adults having chronic mild asthma. Current treatment for asthma suggests daily controlling medication, and for whom that may be cumbersome, the new method may be more suitable.
