Support Offered by NHS to Women Who Suffer Miscarriage Criticized

NHS’ support given to distraught women who have suffered miscarriage has been called into question after two surveys revealed that some women have to wait for days before scans are conducted to check whether their baby has really died. The first survey, carried out by Mumsnet, polled over 1,400 women who had suffered miscarriage. The survey found that more than 63 percent of women who miscarried at home instead of a hospital were not given adequate pain relief while nearly half (48 percent) said that they were treated alongside new born mothers with their babies, adding to their distress.

Around 21 percent of the women who asked for a scan had to wait for at least three days before knowing whether they had really miscarried while 35 percent of those who required surgery had to wait for four days.

The second poll was conducted by gurgle.com and involved more than 500 women. Around 14 percent were told by hospitals that they will have to miscarry four more times before the exact cause can be determined.

Stating that the NHS needs to change its policies, Mumsnet’s Justine Robets said, “There is no getting away from the hurt of miscarriage, but there are a number of simple changes that could make a considerable difference to the level of trauma miscarrying parents undergo.”
