Supreme Court Ruling On Health Care Not Respected. Alleged Physician

Quebec government has not complied with the ruling providing expanded access to private care.

Jacques Chaoulli, a physician who emerged victorious in a historic Supreme Court case around a year ago says that the Quebec government has not complied with the ruling providing expanded access to private care.

'Almost all services are still going to be prohibited from any (private) coverage. It’s a violation of the judgment. Just for political expediency, many Quebecers are going to suffer and eventually to die,' Chaoulli said.

In a decision that surprised many observers, the Supreme Court said that a Quebec government ban on private health insurance for services already covered under Medicare would not stand. Chaoulli represented a patient George Zeliotis, who was forced to bear pain while waiting for a hip replacement.

Tasha Kheiriddin, executive vice-president of the Montreal Economic Institute, said that the decision was not being respected. Chaoulli said that the government wanted to lock the citizens in another long legal battle. 'They say, `If you don't like it, take us to court.' They know that it could take another eight or 10 years for a new case to be resolved.'
