The president of the Australian Orthopedic Association has said that many surgeons wish they could refuse to operate on obese individuals.
Launceston surgeon John Batten revealed that obesity was causing people to opt for joint replacement surgery much earlier in life. "People on average are coming to us 10 years earlier because of their obesity," Mr Batten said.He added that the fat tissue in obese individuals was a big problem. "We find it morally difficult to say 'no, you can't have the operation'," he said. "We would always encourage them to lose weight to decrease the risks (involved with) the surgery."
Morbidly obese patients faced 10 times more risk of complications than patients with a normal body mass index.
