According to a new research, surgery improves the quality of life for people with Meniere's disease. Meniere's disease is a disorder of the ear which leads to progressive deafness, dizziness, vomiting and tinnitus. The problem lies with a swelling of the endolymphatic duct in the ear and this area can be the target of corrective surgery.
Researchers at the Michigan Ear Institute in the US have been looking at the effects of such surgery for Meniere's disease. They asked 165 patients of average aged 50 years undergoing endolymphatic surgery about their quality of life following the procedure. The vast majority - 85 per cent - said their quality of life increased after the operation. This study should help guide those considering surgical treatment for Meniere's disease.
