Survey Finds Women in US Have Kids from Multiple Partners

Nearly a third of US women who have two or three children have given birth to their children with more than a single partner, a new survey carried out by researchers at University of Michigan Institute reveals. Nearly 4,000 women took part in the survey over a period of 27 years and the researchers found that over 28 percent of the women had children with more than a single partner. The rate was highest among African American women with 59 percent while it was lowest among white women at 22 percent with 35 percent of Hispanic women having children with different men.

Lead author Cassandra Dorius presented the findings at the annual meeting of Population Association of America and said that having different fathers is not good for either the health or the well being of the children.

“Raising children who have different fathers is a major factor in the intergenerational transmission of disadvantage. Juggling all of the different needs and demands of fathers in at least two households, four or more pairs of grandparents, and two or more children, creates a huge set of chronic stressors that families have to deal with for decades”, Dorius said.
