It's not just being driven to tears by cruel jibes - 10 per cent have been physically attacked.

The survey among 16,517 workers in 53 countries by recruitment website Monster said a quarter claimed bullying has affected their performance at work, the Daily Express reported.

Experts fear that this is likely to affect the morale of the whole workplace, drive out the best staff and hit profits.

Some 83 per cent of European respondents claimed to have been physically or emotionally bullied.

This compares with 65 per cent in the Americas and 55 per cent in Asia.
