Majority of users resort to online piracy due to frustration and most are willing to pay a monthly download fee, reveals survey. Statistically, one in two people illegally download music, movies and TV shows from the Internet, costing the industry 1.4 billion dollars in lost revenue each year.
"So we have ended up with reluctant pirates," the Courier Mail quoted Jennifer Wilson, co-director of The Project Factory, which carried out the research as saying.
"Sometimes content is not available and users are forced down the path of stealing." she added.
Notwithstanding the rampant piracy, the entertainment industry can still breathe a sigh of relief, as 83 pc of the respondents admitted willing to pay a monthly subscription fee to be able to download unlimited movies, music and games.
The survey showed downloading television shows from the US or the UK that had not yet aired in Australia was among the most common practises in the world of piracy.
It emerged that forty pc of the respondents reported having downloaded digital content for free that should have been paid for, while 10 pc were unsure whether they had committed piracy.
