Systemic Corticosteroid Therapy can be used for treating all types of Infectious Mononucleosis

Scott Thompson and colleagues from University of Rochester Medical Center, has found from review of records of patients treated with corticosteroids that Corticosteroids is the most effective and useful treatment

Scott Thompson and colleagues from University of Rochester Medical Center, has found from review of records of patients treated with corticosteroids that Corticosteroids is the most effective and useful treatment option for Infectious mononucleosis, including severe airway compromise mononucleosis. The results of the study have been published in Achieves of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, JAMA Journal. The researcher’s analyzed data of patients treated for Infectious mononucleosis with corticosteroids from January 1998 to March 2003. The results of the study disapproved earlier controversies over the usage of systemic corticosteroids for infectious mononucleosis.

The study review showed that Corticosteroid therapy was used in 92 patients with infectious mononucleosis of the total 206 patients with infectious mononucleosis. These results show that there was an increase in doctors treating patients with infectious mononucleosis with corticosteroids. The patients were follow up for disease prognosis during regular physician visits, inpatient admissions and during consultations.

Dr. Scott Thompson said, “Despite consistent and uniform acceptance in the medical literature that SCT in the setting of IM [infectious mononucleosis] should be reserved for patients with impending airway obstruction, corticosteroids continue to be used on a much broader scale at this tertiary care institution and this observation suggests that clinicians see value in SCT for treatment of IM beyond the classically accepted reasons. Moreover, despite previous reports of possible adverse consequences of SCT in IM, our review failed to demonstrate any such trend.”
