Experts at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization have said that tanning beds are definitely carcinogenic and promote cancer formation in consumers.
Earlier the organization had rated these sunbeds as probably carcinoigenic, but a review of 20 studies on the subject forced them to upgrade their warnings."People need to be reminded of the risks of sunbeds," said Vincent Cogliano, one of the cancer researchers. "We hope the prevailing culture will change so teens don't think they need to use sunbeds to get a tan."
The International Agency for Cancer Research also said that most tanning beds use UV radiation, which is linked to skin and eye cancer.
The details of the study appear online in the Lancet Oncology.
