A study has found that teenage school girls are growing up deficient in iodine, putting their unborn children at risk as iodine is essential for the neurological development of the fetus. Iodine is essential for manufacturing the hormone thyroxine which controls the metabolic rate, affecting growth and development. A survey which was conducted across UK has found that 51% girls had mild iodine deficiency, 16% moderate and 1% severe. Evidence shows that moderate to severe iodine deficiency, less than half the recommended level, can reduce IQ level by 10-15 points.
Low milk and high egg intake were linked with iodine deficiency.
