Teeth Whiteners Recalled from Australian Market
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) recalled nine Do-it-yourself (DIY) teeth whitening products by White My Bite (White My Bite Sensitive, White My Bite Professional and White My Bite Advanced kits), WhiteSmile (DayWhite Teeth Whitening Gel, NiteWhite Teeth Whitening Gel, Sunshine Health Teeth Whitening Gel, and Crest Teeth Whitening Strips) and DaVinci Elite (DaVinci Elite tooth whitening pen and DaVinci Elite take-home teeth whitening kit) because they contained unsafe concentrations of peroxide.
Users complained of chemical burns to gums and mouth, blistering or ulceration of the mouth and throat, tooth sensitivity, marbled or unnaturally colored teeth, tissue tingling and headaches.

ACCC commissioner Sarah Court said, "Consumers seeking a pearly white smile should be 'extremely cautious' before undertaking DIY teeth whitening treatments." She advised people against using DIY teeth whitening kits if the concentration of the bleaching agent is not clearly labelled, or if they contain more than 6% hydrogen peroxide and/or more than 18% carbamide peroxide.

Notifications regarding the safe levels of peroxide were issued to all known suppliers of DIY teeth whitening kits. Suppliers of DIY kits who fail to comply with these mandatory product safety standards could face penalties of up to $1.1 million for companies and $220,000 for individuals.
