New drug promises to be more efficient in treating symptoms of chronic constipation.
Tegaserod, a new drug seems to the remedy of choice to treat chronic constipation.A new study published in the American Journal of Gastroentrology claims that, it is far more superior in effectiveness that other drugs used currently.Current laxatives used for treating chronic constipation do not seem to offer the same degree of relief.
Chronic constipation is a common disorder, affecting the intestinal tract .Today, its estimated that at least 15% of the population in the West suffer from it at any given time. Tegaserod has shown effectiveness in alleviating a wide range of symptoms. So far medical research has been unsuccessful in needling out the exact reasons that leads to abdominal discomfort and irregularity in bowel-movement associated with CC. Several approaches for treating Chronic Constipation such as lifestyle changes and increased inclusion of fiber in diet have been tried in the past. However the efficacy of such methods are debatable.
“Chronic constipation is a complex medical disorder and several bodily mechanisms are involved in its development,” says Stefan Müller-Lissner, M.D., lead author of the study. “The positive results we have found from tegaserod treatment in relieving this array of symptoms could potentially benefit millions.”
The long-term safety, efficacy and tolerability of tegaserod have been proven. Patients show no serious side-effects from long-term usage and maximal improvements were observed after approximately 6 months of further treatment and were sustained thereafter.
