Hence it is thought that the telomeres play a very important role in the ageing process. The study compared the length of telomeres of 1,552 female twins in Britain between the age of 18 and 75. The participants were also adjusted for other factors such as obesity, smoking and exercise. The scientists found that telomeres in women who belong to lower economic status were significantly shorter as they age faster than their better-off counterparts. Hence in conclusion the British researchers said that social class affects health, age-related diseases and also the ageing process.Dr. Tim Spector of St. Thomas's Hospital in London who is the lead researcher of this study said that telomeres loss is associated with ageing. The study results were published in the journal Ageing Cell. The author said that there existed a seven-year difference in telomere loss between people of the same age, same body mass index, same smoking status, same exercise status who happen to be in a manual job or non-manual job, which roughly divides the social classes. He said that psychological stress play an important role and might be an important cause in increasing the levels of oxidative stress in the body and quickens the ageing process.
