Text Messaging Bullying Becoming Common in US
Many children in US report being harassed or bullied via text messages, according to Growing Up with Media survey. 'Harassment' meant that peers had 'spread rumors' about them or made 'rude or mean comments' or 'threatened' them.
The study included over 1,500 young people aged 10-15 years who answered questions online between 2006-2008. About 24% said they had been 'harassed' by text messages. The findings suggest that attention needs to be paid to kids text-messaging.

Lead researcher Michele L. Ybarra, of Internet Solutions for Kids, Inc., in San Clemente, California said, "This is not a reason to become distressed or take kids cellphones away. The majority of kids seem to be navigating these new technologies pretty healthfully."

The study has been published in 'Pediatrics'.
