The union Health Minister, Dr. CP Thakur, today warned doctors that their names could be removed from the register of the Medical Council of India (MCI) if they were found guilty of indulging in female foeticide.
The warning comes in the wake of the recent nation-wide Census, which has come out with a disturbing picture of male-female gender ratio, particularly in relation to children under the age of six. While there was slight improvement in the sex ratio for the past decade, the ratio had considerably declined for the age group of zero to six.
The over-all sex ratio has increased from 927 women per 1000 men in the 1990 to 933 women per 1000 men now. But, the ratio for the index six group has dipped alarmingly from 945 girls per 1000 boys to 927 girls to 1000 boys.
