The Central Government of India has now issued a list of permitted additives ,preservatives and antioxidants with their corresponding reference standards or grades that should be followed in the manufacture of Ayurveda, Siddha or Unani drugs. The list was issued after a number of reports claimed that individuals found consuming such medications on a long-term basis had developed adverse effects.
The substances permitted according to the list consists of 87 additives, 14 preservatives and six antioxidants. In the case of colouring agents, flavouring agents and alternate sweeteners, it has been mentioned that the permission would be on the basis of the existing approvals accorded under Drugs and Cosmetic Rules 1945, Fruits Products Order and Prevention of Food Adulteration Act. According to the notice issued preservatives, alternative sweeteners and colouring agents that are used should be mentioned on the label of the product and manufacturing units should maintain the records of additives used in various processes and dosage preparation.
