According to a new study, as the demand for facial cosmetic surgery has increased, so too has the price of procedures, Cosmetic surgery has never been more popular. Most products go down in price as demand goes up. Now economics researchers in Texas have looked at how cosmetic surgery, as a product, has performed in the marketplace over the last decade.
They surveyed 1,600 members of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to assess how the frequency and costs of four common cosmetic surgery procedures had changed from 1980 to 1999. The procedures were: facelift, brow-lift, eyelid surgery(blepharoplasty) and nose remodelling (rhinoplasty). They found a direct relationship between increasing surgeons' fees and increasing demand for these procedures. This suggests, say the researchers, that cosmetic surgery is seen as a luxury item, with consumers willing to pay increasingly steep fees. Maybe this is a reflection of the increasing importance people put upon their self-image - which is fine, so long as it doesn't cause too much damage to your bank account.
