Researchers say elevated insulin production in patients is associated with the risk of colorectal cancer. Elevated insulin production is known as hyperinsulinemia. This association is seen even after considering body mass index, exercise levels and other factors related to insulin.
Researchers studied men with and without colorectal cancer. In each participant, they measured the plasma concentration of C-peptide, which is an indicator of insulin production.Researchers say their data not only supports the hypothesis that elevated long-term insulin production is one underlying mechanism to link dietary and lifestyle risk factors with colorectal cancer risk, but also provide a strong biologic argument that avoiding or reducing the modifiable risk factors … could effectively decrease the risk of colorectal cancer and the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
