There is a need to introduce laughter in hospitals as the atmosphere is too grim, according to Jean-Paul Bell also known as ‘Dr B Loony’, the clown doctor. Dr Bell has authored a book called Laughter is the Best Medicine, where he shares his experiences as a clown doctor.
"You'll grab a laugh instantly just to escape where you're at - humour has that effect where it gives you a brief out-of-body experience," Dr Bell said.He added that the service he co-founded provided laughter to many patients across Australia. The charitable service now boasts of 70 clown doctors. "To reduce pain by distracting a child is a great skill. It does take a little bit of lunacy at some times to get them to a state of half-crying, half-laughing," Dr Bell said.
Clown doctors are seen with red-nose and a lab coat. The sight is common in children's wards.
