Timing – Crucial for Asthma Drugs to Work

Dr. Richard Martin, head of the pulmonary division at National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver, suggests that allergy pills must be consumed before bedtime and asthma medicines

Dr. Richard Martin, head of the pulmonary division at National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver, suggests that allergy pills must be consumed before bedtime and asthma medicines in the late afternoon to maximise its effectiveness.

The advice is drawn from the fact that body behaviour is not the same at all times in a day. Body rhythms, also called as the circadian rhythms influences allergy and asthma. "Taking your allergy medication at night assures that it will be circulating in your blood stream when you most need it, early the next morning," Martin said.

Asthma symptoms, could reach a crescendo at about 4 a.m. Patients suffering acute asthma necessitating oral steroid drugs, should ideally consume this medication in the afternoon at 3 p.m. People with moderate asthma usually resort to steroid inhalers. These drugs are most effective if taken between 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., according to Martin.

There is also a flip side to this timing. What if, the patients forget to take their drugs ? William E. Berger, MBA and professor of medicine at the University of California, Irvine, had this to say, "It is unrealistic to think that people who have to take preventive medicines on a regular basis, such as inhaled steroids, will take them between 3:00 and 5:30 in the afternoon. The vast majority will take them when -- and if -- they remember to take them."

Berger and Martin have explained the importance of regularity with allergy medications. In order to remember to take the drugs, they recommend that it is best to associate the task with other actions they perform during the day.
