People with low blood sugar should not skip meals or scheduled snacks when taking insulin, as this increases hypoglycemia.
With the tremendous increase in traffic, driving has become a tedious task. Sharp mind and quick reflexes are crucial for good driving.
Joyce Barnett, a registered dietician and assistant professor of clinical nutrition at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, says that even a small drop in blood sugar in diabetics can prove disastrous while driving. She emphasises the importance of not skipping meals or scheduled snacks when taking insulin, as this increases hypoglycemia.
Barnett suggests to people with diabetes to always keep with them carbohydrate-rich foods -- such as Glucose tabs, hard candy, and regular not diet sodas—in case their blood sugar drops.
"If somebody's blood glucose levels drop, the general guideline is to eat or drink 15 grams of a carbohydrate-rich food or beverage, wait 15 minutes, then test again," Barnett says.
