Many of the cases filed by Tamil Nadu directorate of drugs of drugs control relate to spurious drugs. This news follows fast on the heels of a Times of India report, which said substandard disinfectants had been found in the state healthcare network.
"Spurious drugs have no doubt increased but we would like to say that they are more prominent now than ever before because we are beginning to crack down on them," said director of drugs control Dr M Bhaskaran.160 cases have been filed by the directorate since April last year. Some 60 cases relate to fake and substandard drugs. This is blatant violation of Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
It has also emerged that 0.5% of the 40,000 drug samples tested are spurious.
