Too Much Or Little Sleep Increases Risk Of Diabetes

Studies show that men having either too much or too little sleep, are more prone to TypeII Diabetes.

According to a study by the New England Research Institutes in collaboration with Yale School of Medicine researchers men who sleep too much or too little are at a greater risk of developing type II diabetes. The data originally published in March is based on studies done on over 1709 men, in the age groups of 40–70, the men were studied on over a period of 15 yrs.

According to the lead researcher Dr.H.Klar Yaggi, M.D., professor in Yale's Department of Internal Medicine, pulmonary section. It was found that men with 6-8 hrs sleep were most healthy. In Comparison men who stated that they slept between 5-6 hrs a night were twice as likely to develop diabetes, while those who slept for more than 8 hrs were three times at risk. The risks were the same after they had separated risk groups like, hypertension, smoking, etc.

With these studies he felt the researchers know beginning to understand the hormonal and metabolic implication sleep. As of now and the research he felt that men sleeping too little, are having marked alterations in the metabolic and hormonal functions including decreased carbohydrate tolerance, insulin resistance, and lower levels of the hormone leading to obesity. They are still studying the men with longer sleep durations. The studies are also trying to determine if disorders of sleep can also cause or worsen the metabolic syndrome.
