Topical administration of quinolone found to be better in treating ear drum perforations than the use of systemic antibiotics.
Topical administration of Quinolone antibiotics for eardrum perforations has been found to be more effective in treating the disease than the use of systemic antibiotics. Dr. Carolyn Macfadyen, Research Associate, International Health Research Group in the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK has reported in a review published in The Cochrane Library that topical quinolone are better than systemic antibiotics for treating chronic discharge from ears.
Chronic suppurative Otits media (CSOM) has been found to be responsible for continuously discharge from ear which can lead to hearing loss if untreated. CSOM as been a common problem in children’s from developing country and can lead to deafness in early age which mostly leads to dumbness in these children’s.Researchers found that CSOM can be easily cured using topical quinolone which offer cheaper and better treatment but the researchers have not done a long term study to know the effect of these quinolone on children’s and in some cases it may lead to ototoxicity due to topical administration which could be controlled if early signs of side effects are reported to your physician.
