Tory MP Says Prescriptions Should be Charged for Those Irresponsible With Their Health
Tory MP Phillip Lee, a practicing GP has warned that the increasing cost of obesity and other lifestyle diseases will surely make the NHS bankrupt and those who choose to eat doughnuts for breakfast should pay for prescriptions if they develop diabetes.
He said that those who eat doughnuts for breakfast should be charged for their prescriptions if they develop diabetes at a later date.

Most of the patients he attended to were victims of illnesses caused by their own bad lifestyles.

Charging people for their own prescriptions will set them thinking about their own health,  he said.  ‘If you want to have doughnuts for breakfast, fine, but there is a cost implication down the line,’ he said. We need to match actions to consequences – at the moment that does not happen in this country.’

Dr Lee also revealed that about £400 million could be saved from the drugs budget by permitting GP surgeries to dispense medicines.
