Tourette's Syndrome Affects More Children Than Previously Thought

U.S. researchers have reported that a neurological disorder called Tourette's syndrome affects more children than previously thought.

A survey of over 92,000 households in the country indicated that three in every 1,000 children have the disorder, which is characterized by debilitating tics like blinking and using foul language.

"Tourette's syndrome and tic disorders have been linked to higher rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and impairments associated with these conditions, such as learning disabilities and problems with peer relations," said co-author Dr. Rebecca Bitsko of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Boys were thrice as likely as girls to be diagnosed with the condition. The details of the report appear in the June 5 issue of the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
