Cancer patients may rejoice as researchers have developed a treatment to treat the condition called “chemobrain” in cancer survivors.
People who suffer from cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy often find the process of treatment affecting their mental functions and cognitive abilities. This condition is called chemobrain and some common symptoms are inability to concentrate, inability to be organized in doing daily activities, inability to think clearly and loss of memory.Researchers from University of Cincinnati have discovered a possible treatment for this condition with the help of the drug dexmethyphenidate (d-MPH). The researchers report that the phase II study of the drug on the condition of chemobrain had been quite successful.
Researchers had reported that 154 cancer survivors in different medical centers have reported significant improvement in their conditions like lessening of fatigue, and increasing memory when treated with 10 mg to 50 mg of the drug d-MPH per day. All the participants of the study had completed four circles of chemotherapy when the drug d-MPH were prescribed and administered to them. Researchers confirmed that their study had shown the drug to be safe and effective to be prescribed to treat “chemobrain “ conditions to patients who need help.
The report was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology this year.
