Trend of High Salt Consumption Among Americans is Worrisome, Says CDC
A new report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States warned that almost all Americans are consuming salt levels in excess of the maximum recommended limit.
According to the guidelines, people should consume a maximum limit of 2,300 mg of salt every day while those with health problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease, should not consume more than 1,500 mg of salt. However CDC revealed that more than 99 percent of those with health problems and 88 percent of healthy Americans consume salt in excess of the recommended limit.

The researchers interviewed more than 18,000 people over the age of two years and said that even childrens’ salt consumption is in excess of the recommended limit. The CDC has warned that this could drastically increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and hypertension among the general population.

“Because usual sodium intake for nearly all U.S. residents exceeds 2010 dietary guidelines, increased efforts involving the public and private sectors, voluntary reductions in processed and restaurant food will be needed”, the report said.
