A new study on child behavior had pointed out that excessive exposure to television at the early childhood age might make the child indulge in bullying behavior.
A child is considered to be a bully when he repeatedly harasses and attacks other children. Bullying can be done by actual physical attack on others or by verbal assaults, threats, extortion and intimidation.Parents who do not read aloud to their children, or provide them with emotional support, or let them watch television in an uncontrolled manner often unknowingly cause their children to become bullies. The researchers, who observed 4yr old children in such situations to the ages of 6 through 11 yrs, said that these behaviors are positively correlated with bullying behaviors.
The results of the study show that parental guidance and nearness plays an important role in controlling aggressive behavior in children. Spending time with your children, helping them in their cognitive stimulation through telling them stories, encouraging them in some form of creative pursuits or even taking them for an educative outing may reign in the aggressive tendencies of the children and make them well adjusted. The researchers are of the opinion that doing such activities together with their parents, children learn understanding, self-control and social skills.
