Following the overwhelming response of MPs in favor of the proposed smoking ban in public places, it is expected that the new smoking ban law would be imposed by the summer of next year in the UK.

A 200-margin victory of 384 Vs 184 has been achieved when the issue of smoking ban extension to all private clubs and pubs were taken up for consideration. Following implementation of the law, both the public and club/pub workers would benefit from a smoke-free environment.

All public places such as cinemas, pubs, clubs, public transport, factories and offices would be included in the smoking ban. However, prisons, army barracks and private homes would be excluded from the list according to official reports.

It is believed by the Health Department that this move could result in the drastic reduction of the number of smokers by a margin of around 650,000 or less.

'MPs have voted for legislation that will mean practically every enclosed public place will be entirely smoke-free by the summer of next year. By requiring licensed premises such as pubs, bars and nightclubs as well as membership clubs to be completely smoke-free, MPs have supported the argument that a level playing field of protection from second-hand smoke should apply regardless of the venue,' said a spokesperson, Department of Health.
