Ultrasound Being Used to Heal Fractures Rapidly by Glasgow Docs

Doctors in the Scottish city of Glasgow are using ultrasound technique to help heal fractures twice as fast compared to the traditional method. The treatments are being done at Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary’s fracture clinic and involve the strapping of the device around the area where the fracture has occurred, after applying an ultrasound gel.

Led by orthopedic surgeon Angus MacLean, this method of treatment is a quicker and less painful way of healing fractures. “This is an ultrasound device which delivers ultrasound waves to the fracture which stimulates bone to heal or to regenerate new bone in terms of fracture healing. We use it really for the difficult fractures - ones with problems with healing and it's a very simple, painless treatment that we can give”, Dr MacLean said.
