UNICEF and the National Basketball Association (NBA) have entered into a partnership to support a global effort for AIDS awareness and prevention.

UNICEF and the National Basketball Association (NBA) have entered into a partnership to support a global effort for AIDS awareness and prevention.

The campaign, 'Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS,' is aimed at limiting the impact of HIV/AIDS on children as well as impeding further spread of the deadly virus.

'We know that our sport, indeed all sports, has an enormous opportunity to deliver important messages on a global basis and this collaboration with UNICEF is just another step in our ongoing commitment to engage our players and our game in the global fight against HIV and AIDS,' said NBA Commissioner David Stern.

'Having these players jump into the game to call attention to the enormous impact of AIDS on children is a huge win for children throughout the world,' said UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman.

'We are grateful to have the NBA as our newest partner,' he added.

NBA Cares, which is the global community outreach initiative that the league launched in 2005 has worked with UNICEF to produce multilingual public service announcements featuring several professional basketball players. These announcements will go on air this month during broadcasts of the NBA Finals. The AIDS awareness television promotional spot which was screened during the press conference featured players from the NBA and WNBA sharing statistics regarding the impact of AIDS on affected children around the world.
