United Kingdom to perform its first Live Liver Transplantation
Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in Scotland will be the first in United Kingdom to perform a Live Liver donation and regeneration in recipient. The Health Minister Andy Kerr said that in 2006 five live liver operations would be done followed by ten the next year.
In live liver regeneration operation a part of liver is transplanted and regenerated following which both the livers functions properly in the donor and recipient, the regeneration to full size of the liver occurs both in the donor and recipient. The risk of death in live liver donation is high compared to live kidney transplants, the risk of death in live liver donation is half to one percent and risk of complications is about twenty percent.Mr. Kerr said:
