For a technical university preparing engineers and other professionals, female foeticide and drug addiction would be quite unlikely topics to take up but the Punjab Technical University (PTU) is all set to launch an awareness campaign on these social issues.
The campaign by PTU gets underway Wednesday from the Swami Vivekanand Institute of Engineering and Technology (SVIET) at Banur, 25 km from here.Vice chancellor S.K. Salwan will launch the campaign, a university spokesman said.
Concerned over the ever widening male and female ratio and the menace of drug addiction among the youth in Punjab, the Jalandhar-based PTU decided to take up the cause of creating awareness among the masses.
Punjab has one of the worst sex ratios in the country with the number of females in the 0-6 years age group being less than 800 per 1,000 males.
After its launch Wednesday, the campaign would be taken up by dozens of colleges affiliated with the university.
Students of these colleges will fan out to rural and urban areas to bring the message to the people that female foeticide and drug addiction were causing irreversible damage to the society in Punjab.
